Travelling beyond the Hive (Mind) with Slang Troubadour
Slang Troubadour is a 26 year old alternative hip-hop artist from Wisconsin, affiliated with Higher Education Records, making music for abstract thinkers and pushing some of the most unique styles in underground hip-hop, meshing styles and elements from intense lyricism, alternative rock, and old school hip-hop, with a reviving new twist.
Slang was born in Eagle, Wisconsin – stating it’s like the “middle of nowhere, sort of country mixed with suburban vibes … and pretty boring”. When he finished high school he moved to Milwaukee for potential opportunities, and college. He studied at UWM, obtained an Interdisciplinary Arts and Technology degree, and made his short film/music video for his final class project in collaboration with the Sofa King, entitled “HIVEMIND”. Working in collaboration with the “film kids” and other fields of the arts department through the whole production of his music video, and directing most of the piece himself, Slang ended up producing a very unique piece.
Slang is influenced by many names from the golden era of hip-hop, like Eyedea, Atmosphere, and Aesop Rock, but his main roots stem from listening to alternative rock. Bands like Green Day, Blink-182, Sum 41, The Offspring, and many others, were in his frequent listening rotation growing up. It was in college when Slang really started finding appreciation and love for the art of hip-hop, starting with Eminem, leading to names like A Tribe Called Quest, MF Doom, Blackstar, Deltron 3030, and The Roots. Clearly Slang has a lot of influences but we made Slang pick two of his favorites. His response? Sublime and Eyedea.
When Slang started his journey as an artist he didn’t take himself too seriously, and even used to go by the name THC. He officially began rapping and making music in 2012, and debuted his first project in 2014 with the “Mostly Cloudy” EP with his two close friends, the Sofa King (who he roomed with in college) and FHOBOS (a close friend since the 1st grade). He still currently works with FHOBOS but has started doing more collaborations with a newer connection, Moses, who is also the owner of Higher Education Records as well as the non-pop events which are streamed and can be caught in person out at their spot in Milwaukee! MF Oblivion and Slang just recently released their song “Cold Blooded” to ALL STREAMING PLATFORMS.
Slang and Moses have also been working on a very special project coming up called “RealityTV”, which is going to have a teaser/debut single dropping soon, to set the existence of the duo as RealityTV in stone! Slang also mentioned that there is a special podcast out monday for the RealityTV single to help promote the project, the podcast is called “Tobey Tobey Tobey”!
On top of all of that news he also has more music coming with FHOBOS as well as a special live stream performance in tribute to the recent passing of one of the greatest super villains to ever exist, MF DOOM, who passed last year (2020) October 31st of unknown instances.
Slang Troubadour is an interesting breed in the world of hip-hop, with a different approach to the way he hops on the tracks. CHECK HIM OUT, you won’t regret it.
